Money’s Not Everything – Don’t Forget the Fringe Benefits

26 06 2010

Sometimes it’s not all about the money. The true value of something might lie in the outlying benefits rather than the cut and dry deal.

When trying to assess the true value of an offer, negotiate a deal, or create a mutually beneficial situation make sure that you consider all of the intangible benefits. Yes, you need to benefit financially in most cases, but it’s the extra benefits beneath the surface that often times are the real gems of the deal.

Here are some real life examples and ideas of some benefits to look for (please note: this is not a complete list…these type of benefits can be as creative as you are and what you’re willing to negotiate for):

Job Searching / Annual Review / Salary & Benefits Negotiation with Current Employer

When looking for and comparing jobs, you’ll certainly need to consider many of the standard factors such as:

a. Salary / Bonus / Incentives

b. Location / Travel

c. The Company

d. Benefits (health, dental, life, disability, etc…)

But what about some of the extra benefits that are not so easily seen such as:

a. Being cross-trained in other departments and encouraged to improve other marketable skills

b. Allowances for: PDAs, Car, Travel, Vacations, Home Internet and Computer, Telecommuting

c. Networking contacts associated with this particular position

d. Flexible Schedule: telecommuting, more free time with your family, etc…

e. Rapid Advancement – Do they actively promote from within? Will my pay and status increase as a result?

f. Extra Retirement and Insurance Benefits

Selling / Marketing

When marketing or selling a product or service to a prospect or client you need to consider some of the intangible benefits other than the immediate dollars you’ll receive.

A few of these extra fringe benefits of making a sale or building a prospect / client relationship include:

a. Cross-Selling other products or services

b. Creating Value – short and long-term – for repeat business

c. Positive Reinforcement to encourage referrals

d. Enhancing Your Reputation

Sometimes, in business as it is in life, it’s the extra unforseen fringe benefits that truly make us wealthy and successful. Keep your eyes open and look for the unforseen and unsaid benefits.

How to Use a Career Guide to Find a Job

26 06 2010

For job-seekers, career guides are an indispensable resource for finding employment. These guides can be used to find a position that sufficiently matches your specific skills. As well, it gives you a good overview of the wide range of jobs available in your field.

To get the most out of a career guide, you should use it to locate where relevant jobs are located. This can let you know if you need to move or if jobs are available in your area. If there are no jobs in your area, but you are not willing to move, then it may be time for a career change.

As well, you can gather information from a career guide on what traits and achievements you will already need in order to land the job. If you have a bachelor’s degree, then it may be useless heading down a career path that requires a PhD at the next stop. Knowing what qualifications are necessary will allow you to tailor your efforts toward getting your dream job.

Most important to some, a career guide provides information on how much money you will be making. If you plan on being the breadwinner in a family of six, then salary information is vital. While there is much more to a job then how much money you make, the pay must be enough to provide for yourself and your family.

Keep in mind, an important aspect of finding a job is identifying the hot niches. If you qualify, these niches are where you will have the most luck trying to find employment. As well, fields with an abundance of job listings are another place to put your effort toward. Job openings are a sign that the field will be expanding. You want to avoid setting your aim on a job in a dying industry.

While career guides are fabulous resources, they are not the only source of information. Ultimately, what is a good job to one person is a bad job to another. Personality largely affects your ability to be satisfied. Therefore, it is wise to do this self-reflection first. After you have a firm grasp of what types of careers would satisfy you for years, then proceed to find related hot job opportunities as described above.

Aviation Industry of India

24 06 2010

The Industry of Aviation in India is amongst the fastest growing globally. It has shown a growth rate of 18% per annum. The open policies of the government have led many foreign players to take interest in this sector. In fact, the private participation constitutes about 75% of this sector. India is thus fast becoming a major player in the global aviation market.

A few factors that have propelled the growth of this sector are: increased purchasing power, lower airfares due to the advent of low-cost carriers, emergence of India as a tourist country, more outbound travel, and the economic progress.

Growth Potential

The entry of low-cost carriers pioneered by Air Deccan helped greatly reduce the costs involved in flying. This helped attract consumers for whom air travel was only a dream. Now a number of low-cost airlines are operating in India, namely Go Airways, Spice Jet, and Kingfisher Air, and they have a major share of the Indian aviation industry.

Thus, domestic participation in this industry in India is projected to grow by 25-30% and internationally by 15%, increasing the potential customers by about 100 million in 2010. Also, by 2020 the cargo section is projected to rise to approximately three million tonnes.

Besides these factors, the initiatives by the government are a further boost to this industry. Its plans to modernize the infrastructure and develop more international airstrips are also proving to be an impetus to this industry. New airports are to be built to handle more traffic and ease the pressure on the existing airfields. Modernization of airstrips in metropolises is also being planned. All these initiatives are through public-private partnerships.

Aviation Policy in India

The policies of the Indian government encourage foreign participation.

Government allows 100% FDI via the automatic route for the green field airports. Also, foreign investment up to 74% is permissible through direct approvals while special permissions are required for 100% investment.

Private investors are allowed to establish general airports and captive airstrips while keeping a distance of 150 km from the existing ones. Complete tax exemption is also granted for 10 years.

About 49% FDI is allowed for investment in domestic airlines via the automatic route. However, this option is not available for foreign airline corporations. Complete equity ownership is granted to NRIs (Non Resident Indians). Foreign direct investment up to 74% is allowed for non-scheduled and cargo airlines.

Thus, all these policies promote foreign investment in this industry.

Future Scope

The Indian aviation industry is forecasted to grow phenomenally in the coming years. The Vision 2020 announced by the Civil Aviation Ministry conceives of building infrastructure to support 280 million customers.

Investments to the extent of US$ 110 billion are envisaged by 2020. About US$ 30 billion for development and sprucing up of existing airports and US$ 80 billion for building new fleets is being estimated. The aerospace giant Boeing projects that the Indian aviation industry will require about 1,000 commercial jets in the coming 20 years.

Related areas like repairs, maintenance, and training also provide good investment potential.

Thus, overall it is a very promising sector and a potent investment area.

India is one of the fastest emerging economies today. With the government encouraging foreign Investments in India, it has become easier for foreign companies to foray into the Indian Markets.

Contract Incubators For Corporate R and D Departments – New Business Model Considered

22 06 2010

Not long ago, I was working on a business plan to set up a local incubator program for garage innovators and inventors. In doing so, I realize that my former experience as a Franchisor Founder prior to retirement lent itself well to a potential franchising of such an endeavor. As I discussed this with an acquaintance he mentioned that; there is a possible business all of its own right there.

Yes, in fact this model could be used by an R and D department on a corporate campus, military research lab, etc. A university might do it too. No problem, they can buy a franchise, slightly modified of course, but that’s not an issue, regional variation will also need slight modifications. Now then, let me briefly explain the incubator; the setting would be a large aircraft hangar, or industrial building, with an executive office suite setup in front. In the open space in the large hangar would be partitioned spaces for the garage entrepreneurs, one per unit, or rather one concept per unit.

Maybe there is space for 30 units, instead of 16. Sixteen, which was the original number I picked due to 4 on a side, and a row of 4 and thus 4 out of the 16 ought to be winners or at least break even, the rest? Well, what the hell you know; high-risk, big gain.

If this system were franchised or contracted with corporate R and D as their outsourced innovation center, imagine the upside to such a business model. An acquaintance looking at this business plan stated that the synergies make sense; “supplying staff either on a short or long term basis; industrial, admin, and managerial,” of course this would be for a non-franchised model component of the business, and there could be a consulting team which goes out and follows the plan.

Indeed, a new type of Six Sigma like program, but only for innovation. It could be taught. I could write the book and manual, it would be refined like any of the prototypes as it goes. Please consider all this.

Inflatable Habitats For Space – A Business Innovation Whose Time Hath Cometh

19 06 2010

With all the new materials it seems that we could make better use of inflatable designs for space, luckily NASA and others are looking into this. Not long ago, I was discussing this with someone online in an Internet style think tank and he had asked me; “Have you seen the latest NASA idea, inflatable ships/bases?”

“Yes,” I said, and “I’ve been watching Bigelow Aerospace space exploits closely for many years, they have the materials needed to do it on a large scale. It makes a lot of sense, float-fly it up to the upper atmosphere and then propel it where you want it. And yet, he asked another question which I am sure is on everyone’s mind; “which if the connotations are correct could prove to be susceptible to meteors.”

Yes, that is a consideration, still, some of these materials are pretty strong when layered in a composite fashion, and such materials might even be used to catch space debris like a net too. Much stronger than steel and layered like composites, they may even be able to withstand small asteroids. Of course, to give my acquaintance the proper credit he did add a caveat to his prior statement; “I’m sure it’s a bit more thought out then a bouncy castle in the sky. At least I hope it is.”

Still that is pretty funny, ha ha ha, yes, I can see it now? Rental bouncy castles for your space party vacation – what is privatized space coming too. We all got a laugh out of that and he’d mentioned that he was having an interesting dialogue with some MIT students in the math program about contemplating the probability and risk factors based on sizes and trajectories of asteroids to see if it made sense based on the durability of the materials.

Indeed, this will be a critical decision making factor for any lunar colony using such technology, so please consider all this.

What is the Value of Your Organisation’s Intellectual Property (IP) And Does it Need Protecting?

17 06 2010

The 19th century British novelist, James Payne said: “A man with an invention on which he has spent his life, but has no means to get it developed for the good of humanity, or even patented for himself, must feel the pinch of poverty very acutely.” His words still ring true today.

For a manufacturing or engineering business in today’s economy, protecting and commercialising designs and inventions is just as important as having a good idea in the first place. It does not depend on whether the economy is doing well or badly, but in a downturn when business is hard to come by, the last thing you want is someone stealing your branding, ideas and the future revenues that go with them.

This principle is now starting to be understood more widely than it has been. IP registration is growing massively, the number of patents is doubling each decade. Manufacturing is moving to emerging economies where IP is key to value generation and economic growth, and developing countries are now recognising the importance of IP. Eighty percent of company value is now said to be held in intangible assets.

Intellectual property and intellectual capital are often misunderstood. All too often organisations file a patent application and think that that is all they need to do. When intellectual property is mentioned, people usually think of filing patents, and registering trademarks and designs. But it is not just about patents and other formal IP such as trademarks, designs and copyright. A company’s value is contained in its wider intellectual capital, where know-how, branding, skills, policies and processes all have a role to play.

The value of IP protection

The need to protect IP applies to both new and well-established companies. Absolute Robotics is an example of an organisation that has recently seen the value of IP protection. It was set up three years ago in Bedfordshire to develop a concept that upgrades standard industrial robots to make them suitable for advanced manufacturing and aerospace applications.

Standard industrial robots are widely used in the manufacturing industry, automotive in particular. However, according to Absolute Robotics, the aircraft industry, among other types of business, has found it difficult to use robots in the construction process or for advanced manufacturing because of their lack of capability for absolute accuracy, networking, large volume in-line manufacturing and inspection. Previous attempts to overcome these problems have usually resulted in expensive, customer-specific solutions that suffer from several limitations.

Robots can lose accuracy because of the distortion and expansion of their joints due to temperature and stiffness related effects. Absolute Robotics has set out to address these problems by developing a method that measures those changes in-line, in real time and with great accuracy. At the core of the system is a new measurement device that uses laser beams and imaging sensors to locate the position and orientation of two systems of axes relative to one another.

This concept can be used to calibrate robots in line under their actual working conditions, over their entire working envelope and without interference with the robot’s tools or its productivity cycle. It is also a general solution because it is not robot or application specific. Any robot can be calibrated in absolute space without modification and robots can be networked to each other and also to their work objects in absolute space too. Moreover, the concept allows in-line manufacturing to be integrated with in-line quality assurance to achieve zero scrap condition. Each robot becomes in essence a manufacturing as well as a quality assurance tool, checking the quality of its own performance in-line, to ensure no mistakes are made.

Absolute Robotics realised that it was necessary to ensure that the intellectual property of such an invention would be fully protected right from the beginning. The company contacted Coller IP Management (CIPM), a company that helps organisations understand the value of their intellectual property and to protect and manage it effectively. CIPM has prepared and applied for the required patent applications on behalf of Absolute Robotics. It has also helped the company to evaluate the search reports on the inventions to enable the distinctive and innovative features to be identified.

Absolute Robotics is currently presenting the concept to interested parties and it is being evaluated by a number of organisations. The next step for the company is to form a partnership with appropriate relevant businesses and create a working prototype.

IP protection plan

In summary, whatever the size of your company and whatever stage it is at, it is vital to understand the value of your intellectual capital and have a plan to protect it. Companies, and individuals, pour their flair, imagination, money and time into new inventions. It is well worth putting a little time, money and effort into ensuring that they, rather than a competitor, reap the rewards.

Coller IP Management combines patent attorney and commercial expertise to deliver intellectual property management, evaluation and investment services that unlock the potential of business assets. The company works at all levels within organisations, from start ups to corporates, from the boardroom to technologists and with the investor community. The Importance of Energy Efficient Buildings

15 06 2010

“Going green” has become something of a fashionable expression, applied to everything from shopping bags to shoes, to emphasise the fact that various products now cause less harm to the environment than they were previously known to cause. However, when it comes to business, ensuring your employees carry their work home in hemp bags simply isn’t going to be enough to save the planet. Of course it’s a small step in the right direction, but the race to save the environment won’t be won using a few small steps – we need to start running. One of the very best ways to reduce the negative impact your business has on the environment is to consider the effect of energy efficient buildings.

Given the sheer amount of paper, plastic and glass wasted by big companies, there is no doubt whatsoever that taking steps to improve recycling has had a profoundly positive effect on the environment. However, as popular as this strategy was a decade ago, these days recycling waste isn’t even the least that the people of Britain, of indeed the British government, expect of big business. Although we must all take personal responsibility for our impact on the environment, a single big business alone can do harm to the planet than a small towns, so it is up to them to make the biggest and most important changes.

Of the changes businesses are expected to make, commitment to reduction of carbon emissions is amongst the most important. Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) is a new scheme aimed at slashing the amounts of carbon dioxide pumped into the atmosphere by large companies by offering financial rewards for doing so. As sad as it may be that companies require financial incentive to stop destroyed the planet, this is the state we find ourselves in. Of course, there are myriad different ways in which a company can reduce its carbon emissions, though one of the most effective ways is by ensuring they are using energy efficient buildings. Every day, a massive amount of energy is wasted on fuelling commercial buildings; buildings with a lack of decent insulation, filled with energy inefficient machinery and devices, and lit by incandescent light bulbs with a lifespan a tenth as long florescent alternatives.

Simply investing in suitable windows, light bulbs and equipment in a commercial building will go a huge way to reducing the carbon emissions of the company as a whole. Turning off lights and electronic devices when not in use, as well as investing in eco-friendly boiler systems and furnaces will also help make a building more energy efficient and help your company get in line with new legislation.

While we must ensure we take every little step towards making businesses and households as eco-friendly as possible, we must ensure we don’t overlook the big changes as well. If recycling and hemp bags are a small step in the right direction, ensuring our buildings are as energy efficient as possible is a huge leap.

CADmeleon are experts in Energy Efficiency Software to benchmark and reduce carbon emissions released by your building. Cadmeleon use an innovative software, Carbon Estates for sustainability benchmarking and measuring energy efficiency.
